Nestled in the coastal region of Beaufort County, South Carolina, lies a remarkable anomaly – a vibrant village that preserves and celebrates the rich heritage of the Yoruba people of West Africa.  Founded in 1970, this is Oyotunji, named after the ancient Oyo Empire, a beacon of African legacy on American shores.

The founder, Oba Efuntola Oseijeman Adelabu Adefunmi I Oyotunji was the vision of a man born Walter Eugene King, who later embraced the spiritual role of king or "Oba" taking the name  Efuntola Oseijeman Adelabu Adefunmi I Oba Adefunmi sought to establish a place where Black Americans could reconnect with their ancestral roots of the Yoruba tradition, fostering pride, cultural identity and spiritual well-being.
